Writing Guidelines for Level 2 and 3



WRITING CHECKLIST for Level 2 writing – Year 4-5
PRE-WRITING
Do I know what my purpose for writing is?
PLANNING
Have I chosen an appropriate graphic organiser for planning?
Have I included a range of ideas in my planning?
Have I organised my ideas under headings, sections, or other?
Have I added some interesting detail about each of my ideas?
Have I choseninteresting information for my audience?
Have I chosen interesting language for my audience?
DRAFTING and REWORKING
Have I re-read my work to check it makes sense?
Have I checked my plan to make sure I have included all the information?
Does my writing meet the purpose?
Have I improved my work from the feedback I have been given?
SENTENCES
Are there different types of sentences? – simple, compound and some complex
Do the sentences start in different ways?
Have I used some short and long sentences?
Are my sentences correct? – correct tense, use pronouns,
LANGUAGE
Have I used specific verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs in my writing?
Have I used a thesaurus or dictionary to find new words or to check the meaning of words?
STRUCTURE
Is there a simple introduction and conclusion?
Are the events in my writing in the correct order?
EDITING
All my known high frequency words are spelt correctly
I have recorded the sounds I can hear in words that I am not sure of.
I have checked any words I’m still not sure of
Capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks are used correctly in my writing.
I use speech marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contractions correctly most of the time
CONFERENCING
I have shared my writing with  my buddy
I have shared my writing with my teacher and responded to the feedback.

PLANNING
Have I chosen a genre or structure that suits my purpose?
Have I started to group my ideas into paragraphs?
Is there a main idea in each paragraph?
Have I experimented with rich language for my writing?
DRAFTING and REWORKING
Is there evidence of using feedback to improve?
SENTENCES
Are there different types of sentences?
Do the sentences start in different ways?
LANGUAGE
Have I used literary devices for poetic writing? –e.g. metaphor, simile, adjectives, strong verbs.
Have I used technical vocabulary for informational writing?
Have I shown not told?
STRUCTURE
Is there a clear introduction or hook?
Paragraphs with detail?  Have I used my plan to inform this?
Does it make sense? – economy of words
Have I concluded my writing appropriately?
EDITING
Most high frequency words are spelt correctly
I have used strategies for getting to unknown words
You’ve applied spelling rules.
You have checked any words you’re still not sure of and made changes
Punctuation is correct using a range of punctuation to help the writing flow
– full stops and capital letters
- experimented with other types - commas, exclamation marks, speech marks, and colons
CONFERENCING
You will conference regularly with your buddy.
At some point you will conference with the teacher – this could be about any part of the process –have you used your feedback?
